Electric toothbrushes are bad if you have sensitive gums or gingivitis. You should contack tour dentist. At most dental offices they offer a soft bristle toothbrush that is electric and more like the brushes they use to give you a professional cleaning. Talk to your dentist to see whats best for you. If your gums aren't sensitive I wouldnt worry about it.

My dentist actually recommended that I use one to "massage my gums" and I have never heard anything bad about using them.

I would, like most things not overdo it or you could very well (as with a conventional toothbrush) wear away at the enamel of your teeth.

Gums grow back, teeth don’t.

I don't know about that one. I use one and I like it. They do brush your teeth better. My teeth are alot brighter. Not sure about the gum deal. You would think it would toughen them up.

Have not heard anything negative, I suppose not brushing at all would be worse.
