What are the benefits of xylitol in dental health, and why?

I have started chewing xylitol gum. Sugar free gum seems to remove food particles from between my teeth. Xylitol is supposed to be even more beneficial in starving bacteria of food. Why?

Xylitol is a sugar derivative that’s not processable by bacteria for food; this means the bacteria aren’t given a food source when chewing the gum; it would be better if we were chewing wax or something like that, but since people like sweet things Xylitol is sweet but doesn’t, as far sas is known, contribute to decay.

Chewing gum without sugar or variants edible by bacteria has the benefit of increasing salivation, significant because it’s saliva that carries the components to remineralize enamel.
