u can send those flossers which are easier to use than floss, mouthwash and her own special toothpaste. make a chart for her that includes flossing,brushing and rinsing,2-3 times a day. give her stickers to put on each category each time she brushes and have a special no sweet/food treat for her when she comes to ur house. hv her bring the chart with her.

talk to her about brushing. show her pictures of why it is important to brush. talk to her about cavaties,stinky breath and "sugar bugs" and what can happen to your teeth if she doesnt brush. get books from the library that are age appropiate. even try to get her teacher to cover it in school. if mom is neglectful then u need to have her taking care of it. 5 year olds are eager to please and if u make it fun she will certainly try to maintain. u could even call her at night and brush together via the phone if the mom will allow u to have daily contact. i would also have dental visits more than the 2 recomm. visits per year.

worse case scenario, if mom is neglecting childs hygeine, seek custody or at least joint custody. then u will hv more time to spend setting her up with good habits tht will become 2nd nature and she can do thm on her own when at moms.

I don’t think there is a dentist in the world who would bond baby teeth – your 5 year old step daughter’s teeth are going to fall out over the next few years – why have them bonded?

Or are you talking about the older child’s teeth? (sorry i’m a bit confused).

I’d take the advice of a dentist i trusted. If you question his treatment, you always have the right to ask for a second opinion.

Your children’s dental technicians can show them how to brush their teeth properly, and it’s not a question of brushing the teeth, it’s more a question of taking care of, and brushing our gums and flossing. Ask the technician to show the children how to brush their own teeth.

A lot of our dental health has to do with hygiene, and the rest is hereditary. It’s not often you see a healthy child who has had root canals.

I would talk to the other parents about it… That’s disgusting and it teaches her horrible hygiene habits. Getting a 5 year old to brush their teeth is one of the easier things to get a 5 year old to do especially considering they have all these wacky flavorings for children and special cartoon character toothbrushes and everything. Getting her teeth bonded could help, but it might be too little too late. I know for me when I was a kid it helped and I had a severe problem with my mouth for whatever reason I was born with too many teeth and I had to get 6 teeth pulled and sedated. Also, Psoriasis runs in my family I have it, my grandma has it, and my youngest sister has it and it is definitely not something to be ignored… As much as court is a hassle maybe you should make a harder attempt to get full custody or something close to it. Or maybe just threaten these other parental guardians with it because not brushing and practicing good hygiene habits is a definite no no.. If you can afford to have this child on medical and dental coverage I don’t see why the courts won’t give you custody… Good Luck to you and your children!

My teeth were bonded when I was little, and even with good dental care from my parents I still got a few cavities. I don't have advice on the situation, but I did want to let you know about the bonding.

I would tell them that she cant drink soda,and teach her how to brush and take care of her teeth and tell her the problems you can have when you dont do it,Thats what my mom always did.

How to prevent dental problems with my step-daughter?
I have a 5yr old step-daughter. We only have visitations with her every other weekend but we are financially responsible for all her medical care. When she is here I brush & floss her teeth regularly but I am pretty certain that her mother & her mother’s boyfriend don’t. My oldest step-daughter who now lives with me because of severe case of neglected Psoriasis & academic failure tells me that when she goes over there that they let her drink Soda & they don’t brush her teeth that much & not very well when they do. I had set an appointment up with our pediatrician because of a sore in her mouth & he said that she has decay & it was imperative that she get to a dentist which I’ve already scheduled an appointment for her. Someone suggested getting her teeth bonded to help prevent cavities, would that help if her dental care is being neglected on a regular basis & if not, what can I do to help my step-daughter & no, it’s not all about money but obviously we don’t want to have to spend an unnecessary amount for root canals constantly if there is something that we can do to prevent it now. Please help, any suggestions are very much appreciated.
